What the music has to do with the movie I’ll never know. Hopefully it translates to, “hey kids, don’t worry, Spider-Man is coming.”
The Captain America: Civil War hype train is not unlike that of a hotly anticipated sneaker release. You’ve got fans clamoring for every little bit of information that they can find online, dissecting each piece to come up with a conclusion that will ultimately have little to do with the final product. Those who are lucky enough to see the film/get the shoe in advance are envied by the rest of the community. It can be a fun time if you’re truly invested in the source material, but it can also be infuriating as the thing you haven’t seen/don’t have yet is being called both the greatest thing ever and the worst abomination to hit mankind.
Anyways, this is one of those special times of the year when the Venn Diagram between comic book fans and sneakerheads overlap. With Marvel having licensed the hell out of Iron Man and The Avengers, we have seen plenty of kicks drop that directly call out Tony Stark. But there are also an equal number of kicks out there that indirectly bring the flawed hero to mind, thanks to his very sneaker-friendly red and gold color scheme. If you’re looking for a pair to rock to Civil War in a few weeks, we’ve got the guide for you if you’re on #TeamIronMan.
Nike LeBron 11 Elite “Championship”
No, LeBron James did not win a championship in these kicks, but they were too cool to not release especially since word about them leaked even though LeBron was opting to rock the Nike Zoom Soldier 7 for much of the Miami Heat’s playoff run. The Postie material mixed with the metallic gold just screams an Iron Man colorway. Despite the ironic nature of the release, they would look great with any Iron Man cosplay.
Nike SB Dunk High Iron Man
While the black midsole and laces and the rusty maroon overlay aren’t what you would call MCU Iron Man staples by any means, the fact that these dropped in 2010 as the number of superhero movies started to ramp up made the association unavoidable. And if these kicks were not your cup of tea, customizers were more than ready to turn them into the Mark III of your dreams.
adidas Top Ten 2000 Iron Man
Adidas Basketball’s retro catalog got the Marvel love in 2015 when it released an Age of Ultron pack to coincide with the release of the second Avengers movie. Kobe Bryant’s first adidas kicks got the Iron Man nod and featured a red upper with gold trimmings and a clear outsole. As great as these kicks are, how awesome would a Hulkbuster colorway have been on a more bulkier pair like the Crazy 1 (aka The KOBE)?
Vans Era Iron Man
Damn, Tony. What?
Reebok Insta Pump Fury Iron Man
Much like the man in the suit, the Reebok Insta Pump Fury was ahead of its time when it first came out back in the days and it still maintains a forward-moving look to this day. About the only that’s disappointing about this pair is that we haven’t seen Robert Downey Jr. rock them during any of his numerous Marvel movie appearances.
Nike Air Force 1 GS Team Red/Metallic Gold
Released in 2010, any kid who wanted to watch Iron Man 2 in theaters had a pair to match. The all-patent leather made them crease city within seconds of rocking them, but their pristine look before putting them on makes it all the worthwhile. While the Nike SB Dunk High we featured earlier had a few fans calling them an Iron Man sneaker, it would be a few years before the adult fanboy and fangirl would be able to rock a red and gold Air Force 1 in their size.
Nike LeBron 10 Elite Championship
LeBron James’ second championship was commemorated by this pair back in 2013. Despite the hefty price tag (it also came bundled with a special Nike LeBron 10 Low), sneakerheads could not get enough of the celebratory kicks. It’s shocking that we haven’t seen another LeBron championship since he left Miami to return to Cleveland, but it’s nowhere near as shocking as the highly divisive plot twist in Iron Man 3, which also released in 2013.
An honorable mention goes out to the great Mache Customs who put together an amazing custom Iron Man package featuring the LeBron 10 Elite. Between the packaging and the shoe itself, it’s one of the best custom jobs ever made. Hell, we could devote an entire list to the best Iron Man custom sneakers out there if we wanted too. Hmmm…
Nike Air Force 1 Downtown
Through the years, the Iron Man suit has gone through a number of changes both big and small and not surprisingly, the same can be said for the shoes that have paid the hero homage directly or indirectly. The slimmer, sleeker Downtown version of the classic Nike Air Force 1 also got a red and gold pair that slightly edges out its GS cousin. That gum sole really does make a world of difference.
adidas Response Boost Iron Man
An Iron Man shoe with Boost is like that scene in Iron Man 3 when Tony calls for the entire armada or suits. At that point, he’s just not playing fair. While an Ultra Boost with a red Primeknit upper and a gold cage would have been a Sneaker and Comic Book Twitter breaking moment, the Response Boost is a fine alternative with a solid design that had zero hype since most everybody paid attention to the adidas Basketball version.
Nike LeBron 9 Elite Championship
The Nike LeBron 9 Elite is still to this day the gold standard of Nike’s Elite Basketball series. It lived up to the hype both from a performance and a design perspective, adding more protection while shedding weight. Many people will point to the Miami Vice colorway as the highlight of the model, but we have to go with the Championship colorway that would make Tony Stark smile. Well, a genuine smile that doesn’t have snark attached to it, I guess…
